Japan Rail map for JRPass.com (visit site)

JRPass.com is a leading provider of Japan Rail passes for use on the extensive Japanese rail system. JRPass.com had an old Google Maps site which required refreshing.

The first phase was to collate the railway lines and stations from a number of sources, prioritise them into Shinkansen, Japan Rail, and non-Japan Rail lines, then associate stations to each line. Then the datasets were loaded into MabBox Studio for styling and labelling, and published as vector tiles.

The interactive map is built using MapBox GL JS, with the JavaScript maps integrated into the JRPass.com Ruby On Rails application. The map is also used on the Fare Calculator page, where customised "great circle" lines are drawn between pairs of stations to show the overall route planning.
